Location: Henllys Open Space Local Nature Reserve

Date and Time: Thursday 16th April, 11am-1:30pm

Overview: Learn how to identify and survey bumblebees as part of the national BeeWalk survey scheme.

Join us at Henllys Open Space Local Nature Reserve to learn basic bumblebee identification and how to undertake BeeWalks, the national survey scheme organised by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. Gwent Wildlife Trust’s ecologist Andy Karran will be running this training, by the end of the session we hope you will be confident both identifying and surveying bumblebees. This training aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge to carry out your own BeeWalk survey, either on a Local Nature Reserve in Torfaen or a greenspace near you such as parks or roadside verges.

What to expect: We will meet at Henllys Local Nature Reserve car park (ST27229370, What Three Words ///kinds.pens.walks)

There will be a short ID talk and explanation of how to set up a survey transect. We will then practice what we have learned on site, identifying bumblebees as we walk. We will aim to finish around 1:30pm.

There are no toilet facilities at this site.

What to bring: Please wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather, the site can be muddy. A camera/mobile phone may be useful for photographing bees to ID. Please bring a drink as the weather may be warm.

Please note that this training event is weather dependent and will only go ahead in dry conditions.

This event is free to attend. Booking is essential. To book please email [email protected]

This event is suitable for all ages, but under 14s will need a parent/guardian to attend with them.

We will be on our feet for at least 90 minutes on uneven ground. Due to the nature of the event no dogs are allowed.
