The Steam Engine Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Blaenavon Heritage Railway's steam locomotives. Working in close partnership with the fireman, the driver ensures the locomotive and train are operated in accordance with the railway's rules, safety standards, and timetable. This role is the culmination of the heritage locomotive training pathway, requiring technical skill, operational awareness, and leadership within the footplate crew.
Key Tasks
- Take charge of the locomotive and footplate crew, ensuring safe and compliant operation at all times
- Conduct pre-service inspections and ensure the locomotive is in safe working order before use
- Manage locomotive handling, including braking, acceleration, and coordination with the fireman to maintain steam pressure and water levels.
- Communicate effectively with signalmen, guards, and station staff to ensure safe train movements
- Operate the locomotive in accordance with the day's working timetable and operational notices
- Supervise and mentor trainee firemen and cleaners, promoting good practice and safety awareness
- Complete post-service checks and reports, and oversee disposal and shutdown of the engine
- Represent the railway in a professional and welcoming manner when interacting with visitors and the public.
