The Diesel Engine Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and professional operation of Blaenavon Heritage Railway's diesel locomotives. Working closely with the second man, the driver ensures all train movements are conducted safely and in accordance with the railway's operating procedures and regulations. The role requires a thorough understanding of locomotive systems, route knowledge, and operational discipline - representing the final stage in the diesel crew training pathway.
Key Tasks
- Take full responsibility for the operation and safety of the locomotive and crew during service
- Carry out thorough pre-service inspections, ensuring the locomotive is fit for duty.
- Operate the locomotive safely and efficiently, adhering to the railway's rules, signals, and operating standards.
- Maintain constant communication with guards, signalmen, and station staff to coordinate train movements.
- Supervise and instruct the second man and trainee crew members, promoting high standards of professionalism and safety.
- Conduct coupling, uncoupling, and shunting operations safely and efficiently.
- Complete post-service checks, refuelling, and any necessary maintenance reports.
- Represent Blaenavon Heritage Railway as an ambassador of its heritage operations when interacting with visitors, fellow volunteers, and the public.
