The Diesel Engine Secondman assists the driver in the safe and efficient operation of Blaenavon Heritage Railway's diesel locomotives. Building on the skills gained as a 3rd Member, the Second man plays an active role in preparing, operating, and shutting down locomotives, while maintaining constant awareness of train movements and safety procedures. This role forms an essential part of the locomotive crew and provides the practical experience needed to progress to diesel driver qualification.
Key Tasks
- Assist with daily preparation of the locomotive, including carrying out fluid checks, inspecting key components, and ensuring the cab is clean and ready for service.
- Support the driver in locomotive operation, including monitoring instruments, communicating signals, and managing train movements.
- Observe and learn locomotive handling techniques under the driver's supervision.
- Assist with coupling and uncoupling, brake tests, and other operational duties in accordance with safety procedures.
- Maintain awareness of line conditions, signals, and instructions throughout the journey.
- Help with end-of-day tasks, including shutdown, refuelling, and basic maintenance checks.
- Provide support and guidance to trainee volunteers (3rd Members) and promote safe working practices.
- Represent Blaenavon Heritage Railway in a professional and friendly manner when interacting with visitors and other volunteers.
