Thrive - Live Long and Prosper is a new wellness campaign fronted by Torfaen Sports Development which aims to energise residents aged 60 years and above, to stay healthy and active in older age.

According to a report by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, healthy life expectancy for women in Torfaen is approximately 55 years, while men’s stands at 60 - both below the Welsh average of 62 years. To help narrow this health gap, Thrive sessions are being offered in Blaenavon, Cwmbran and Pontypool, which include chair-based activities, gentle exercise, circuits, and dance.

Thanks to funding from the Welsh Government, the Thrive campaign hopes to inspire new and existing groups in the community to come forward and seek support. Financial support can be offered to groups in the community that champion wellness and social inclusion, through the various sporting and social activities they offer.

So far, groups have received support for acquiring equipment, renting facilities, and covering instructor costs. Torfaen Sports Development Officer, Ben Jeffries, said “Thrive is not just a campaign; it’s a movement. Our sessions and community groups already operating across the borough provide essential activities that promote physical health, mental resilience, and a sense of belonging. "We’re calling upon more groups to pledge their support, and for individuals who may be inspired to start a group or class, to commit to our mission: to make the over 60s community in Torfaen the fittest and healthiest it’s ever been."

The current timetable for Thrive sessions, hosted by Torfaen Sports Development:

Monday - Gentle exercise – Thornhill Community Centre, Cwmbran 12:30 - 1:30pm

Wednesday - Gentle circuits – Blaenavon Workingmen’s Hall, 11am-12pm

Friday - Chair-based exercise – Blaenavon Workingmen’s Hall, 10-11am

Dance exercise – Blaenavon Workingmen’s Hall, 11am-12pm

Sunday - Dance – Panteg House, 9:30-10:30am

Furthermore, Strength & Performance classes take place at Windsor Road Griffithstown, every Tuesday and Friday at 11am. Charges apply.

Councillor Fiona Cross, Torfaen Council Executive Member for Communities, said: "This programme promotes lifelong physical activity in a variety of forms, aiming to empower our over 60s population to lead active lives and prevent sedentary lifestyles. "It aligns well with the council's county plan wellbeing objectives and the Gwent Marmot principles, focusing on health equity and reducing health disparities."
