Role Purpose
To support Torfaen County Borough Council (TCBC) in providing dignity and compassion to deceased individuals who have no known family or friends by attending their funerals. This role ensures that no one is laid to rest alone and reflects the community’s dignity, respect, and care for all its members.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend funerals of individuals with no known next of kin or attendees
- Represent the community with dignity, respect, and compassion
- Participate silently or respectfully in funeral proceedings
- Consult with lead funeral companion volunteer to receive funeral details and guidance
- Always maintain confidentiality and sensitivity
- Uphold the solemnity and respectful nature of the role
- Refer any concerns or unusual circumstances to the Cemeteries Manager
- Follow all Health and Safety and safeguarding procedures Requirements
- Minimum age 18+ due to nature of the role
- Flexibility to travel to various locations across Torfaen dependant on service
- Able to commit to agreed funeral attendance and notify staff of any changes
- Willing to undergo an enhances Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
- Completion of required training (e.g. safeguarding, bereavement awareness)

- Ability to maintain composure and sensitivity in solemn settings (Essential)
- Reliable and punctual (Essential)
- Understanding of bereavement and end-of-life dignity (Desirable)
