The Engineering (Mechanical, Wood, and Electrical Department) contributes to the maintenance, restoration, and safe operation of the railway’s locomotives, rolling stock, and infrastructure. This multidisciplinary team ensures that all mechanical, wooden, and electrical systems across the railway are maintained to a high heritage standard. Volunteers in this department play a crucial role in keeping the railway running smoothly and preserving its historic equipment for future generations.
Key Tasks
- Carry out maintenance, repair, and restoration work on locomotives, rolling stock, and station or yard equipment.
- Undertake mechanical engineering tasks such as machining, fitting, fabrication, and component repair.
- Perform woodworking tasks, including carpentry, bodywork restoration, joinery, and coach interior work.
- Assist with electrical maintenance, wiring, and testing on locomotives, lighting, and station systems (under appropriate supervision).
- Support mechanical inspections and periodic inspections to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
- Keep accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with health, safety, and environmental procedures.
- Help maintain the cleanliness, organisation, and safe operation of workshops and stores.
- Work collaboratively with other departments (e.g. Carriage & Wagon, Operations, and Infrastructure) to meet operational needs.
- Assist in the training and supervision of new volunteers where appropriate.
