"Relay For Life" is a Cancer Research UK fundraising event.
It is a global movement - starting in America in the 80s, and now taking place in 25 countries across the world. In the UK there are a number of Relays - with 2 of them in Wales.
Relay came to Pontypool Park for the first time on April 30/04/2016. That year Pontypool Relay For Life was recognised as the best first ever relay in the whole of the UK raising £63K, the most a Relay has before in its first year.
In the six Relays to date we’ve raised £443,866 for Cancer Research, last year raising a whopping £91,344. Amazing for a small community eh!
**Our 2024 Relay is to be held Saturday 6th July to 7th July**
The concept of Relay is simple really - you enter a team of 8-15 people (registration is free) and then do some fundraising ahead of relay day (Raffles, Bucket collections, social evenings etc).
On Relay Day all teams come together to celebrate the fundraising they have done and they walk around a track for 24 hours to show Cancer doesn't sleep, so neither will we. Obviously the walking is shared amongst the team! Its a real festival feel, where teams can camp at the park, local bands and community groups entertain Relayers throughout the day, there are fancy dress laps too.
We invite people fighting cancer currently or surviving Cancer to join us on the day as our VIPs (we call them our Survivors). If Survivors want to attend they are welcome to register as a Survivor and bring one guest. There is also a very special ceremony at dusk - our Candle of Hope ceremony where candle bags are dedicated to those we love and lit to symbolise Hope, and used to light the way of the Relayers throughout the night.
Even if you are not taking part in relay we invite you to join the Candle of Hope Ceremony - its one you will never forget.
There are currently 10 Teams registered to take part with more registering shortly.
***If you wish to take part and/or find out more, please do not hesitate to comment or visit.
