Health Determinants Research Collaboration Torfaen

We are one of 30 Health Determinants Research Collaborations (HDRCs) across the UK and the second in Wales.  

HDRC Torfaen is part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research, hosted by Torfaen Council.  

The team will carry out extensive research and data analysis to understand why some people and communities in Torfaen have poor mental and physical health, and what can be done to improve them.   

Over the next five years, the team will: 

  • Use research and evidence to make decisions 
  • Involve local people in health research priorities 
  • Link data with strategic decision-making  
  • Share learning  
  • Evaluate impact and interventions 

HDRC Torfaen is a partnership between Torfaen Council, University of South Wales and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

What is the National Institute for Health and Care Research? 

The National Institute for Health and Care Research funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people’s health and well-being and promote economic growth. 

The NIHR has awarded £150m to 30 HDRCs across the UK to provide capacity and capability for local authorities to undertake public health research to address the wider determinants of health and health inequalities.
