Traditional Brass Band in the World Heritage town of Blaenavon

About

Traditional Brass Band in the World Heritage town of Blaenavon

The Band is one of the oldest cultural organisations in the town, historical records show that there was a Brass Band in the town in 1833, some 180 years ago. Originally known as the Blaenavon Town Silver Band, it then became supported by the local colliery, Big Pit and through subscription it was known as the Blaenavon Colliery Workmen’s Band until the pit closed in the early 1980’s, and is now known as the Blaenavon Town Band.

It is arguably the only former colliery Band in the UK that still has a colliery in it’s town, albeit now the National Mining Museum of Wales, and the Band often plays at the Pit supporting their events.

The Band provides a performing platform for local brass musicians, performing on the concert and contest stage both locally and nationally, often supporting many charities, including Velindre Hospital, St David’s Foundation & Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

To help secure its future, it also supports a thriving Youth Section.

Currently the Junior Band rehearses on a Tuesday evening and the Senior Band on a Thursday evening in our Covid secure bandhall at Avon Road, Blaenavon.

Over the past few years the Band has enjoyed many successes on the contest stage having been crowned Welsh Regional Champions in March, 2014 and as a result of this success went on to compete in the finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain that year where it gained 7th place competing against 20 other Bands from across Great Britain and in 2018 took part in the Welsh National Eisteddfod in the Wales Millennium Centre. Securing third prize in its section, it’s performance was also televised on S4C.
