The Train Guard is responsible for the safe operation and management of passenger trains on the Blaenavon Heritage Railway. Working closely with the driver, signalmen, and station staff, the guard ensures that all train movements are conducted safely, on time, and in line with the railway's operational rules. The guard also plays a key public-facing role, ensuring passengers enjoy a safe, comfortable, and engaging heritage experience.
Key tasks
- Take charge of the safe operation of the train, ensuring compliance with all operating and safety procedures
- Conduct brake tests and safety checks prior to departure.
- Give the right-of-way signal to the driver when the train is ready to depart.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, signalmen, and station staff throughout the journey
- Ensure passengers board and alight safely and assist those who may need extra help.
- Monitor passenger comfort and safety during the trip, addressing any issues that arise.
- Maintain accurate train logs and complete relevant operational documentation.
- Secure and check carriage doors, lights, and heating where applicable.
- Assist with shunting, coupling, and uncoupling as required.
- Represent the railway in a professional and welcoming manner, answering questions and promoting a positive visitor experience.
