Special Olympics Wales is expanding its presence in
Torfaen to provide life-changing sports opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.
By partnering with local clubs and the
Torfaen Sports Development Team, the organisation aims to establish a permanent local network that empowers athletes through year-round training and competition. This initiative focuses on "Inclusion in Action," ensuring that residents from age 8 to adulthood can access Olympic-style sports like athletics, swimming, and boccia right in their home borough.
The expansion is supported by the
Wales Alliance for Physical Activity, which works to make sport accessible to everyone with a learning disability. In Torfaen, current efforts include accredited "insport Club Gold" programmes such as Torfaen Dolphins/Spartans and Valleys Gymnastics Academy, which provide specialized pathways for competitive success. Community members are encouraged to join as athletes, volunteers, or "Unified Partners" to help build a more inclusive sporting culture ahead of the upcoming
2026 National Summer Games.
