The Carriage & Wagon Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and restoration of the railway’s coaching stock and goods vehicles. Working as part of the Carriage & Wagon (C&W) team, this role helps ensure that all rolling stock is safe, operational, and presented to a high heritage standard. Volunteers in this department play a vital part in preserving historic railway vehicles and supporting the safe operation of passenger services.
Key Tasks
- Inspect, maintain, and repair passenger coaches and goods wagons in line with the railway’s maintenance standards and safety procedures.
- Assist with restoration projects, including woodworking, metalwork, painting, and fitting tasks.
- Carry out brake inspections, lubrication, and underframe checks as directed by the C&W Supervisor. Support periodic overhauls and re-certification of vehicles for operational use.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with the railway’s safety management system.
- Assist with moving rolling stock within the yard (under supervision and following safe procedures).
- Keep the workshop and yard areas tidy and organised.
- Work collaboratively with other departments, such as Operations and Locomotive, to meet service needs.
