The Diesel Engine 3rd Member supports the driver and second man in the safe operation of the railway's diesel locomotives. This entry-level role provides hands-on experience in heritage diesel operations and acts as the first step in the diesel footplate training pathway. The 3rd Member assists with preparation, cleaning, and basic operational duties under supervision, gaining the knowledge and skills needed to progress to second man and driver roles.
Key Tasks
- Assist with preparing diesel locomotives for service, including checking oil, fuel, and coolant levels under supervision.
- Support cleaning and minor maintenance of the locomotive and cab.
- Help ensure the locomotive and surrounding areas are safe and tidy before and after service
- Observe and learn operational procedures, including start-up, shut-down, and safe driving practices
- Assist the crew during train operations, including coupling/uncoupling and brake tests (under instruction).
- Follow all safety rules and instructions from the driver and second man.
- Represent Blaenavon Heritage Railway positively when interacting with visitors and other volunteers
