The Duty Manager is responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient running of all railway operations during an operating day. Acting as the senior on-site representative of Blaenavon Heritage Railway, the Duty Manager coordinates between departments, ensures compliance with operational and safety procedures, and provides leadership and support to volunteers across the railway. This key role helps ensure that visitors enjoy a safe, smooth, and memorable heritage experience.
Key Tasks
- Take overall responsibility for the safe operation of the railway during their rostered duty.
- Conduct morning and end-of-day briefings for operational staff and volunteers.
- Liaise with the Operations Manager, Station Masters, Guards, Drivers, and other departments to ensure train services run to schedule.
- Monitor compliance with the railway's safety management system and operational standards
- Respond promptly and effectively to incidents, delays, or operational issues, ensuring appropriate reporting and action.
- Act as the main point of contact for all departments, coordinating communication and decision-making throughout the day.
- Ensure all public areas are staffed appropriately and that customer service standards are maintained.
- Support and mentor volunteers, encouraging teamwork, confidence, and a positive volunteering experience.
- Complete operational records, incident logs, and end-of-day reports as required.
- Represent Blaenavon Heritage Railway professionally when dealing with visitors, emergency services, or external contacts.
